Discounts and fees
Wrap fees are ordinary product lines, so your discounts apply to them unless you say otherwise. This article shows how to keep them out of a discount and what the app does when a fee is discounted to zero.
Fee lines are products
When a shopper picks a paid wrap style, the widget adds a line for the app's hidden Gift wrap product, one unit per wrapped item, at the style's current price. Shopify charges it at checkout like any other line. It appears in the cart as Gift wrap: <style> × <count> and on the order as a line item for the product Gift wrap.
How discounts treat it is Shopify's rule, not the app's. The app does not change Shopify's discount behaviour, so expect the fee to be treated like any other product line:
- Discounts that apply to the whole order include it.
- Discounts limited to specific products or collections include it only if the Gift wrap product is in that list.
- For a product or collection discount, it counts towards a minimum purchase amount or quantity only when Gift wrap is included in that discount.
- Tax is charged on it by default. See Wrap styles and settings to change that.
- Presentment currency conversion is Shopify's, the same as for your products.
Keep the fee out of a discount
Use a discount that applies to specific products or collections, and leave the Gift wrap product out. The steps below follow Shopify's discount settings; the names may differ a little in your admin.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts and open or create the discount.
- Choose Amount off products. A discount of type Amount off orders covers every line, including the fee.
- Under Applies to, choose Specific collections or Specific products.
- Pick your products or collections. Do not pick Gift wrap.
- Save.
- Add a wrapped item to a test cart, apply the discount and check that the fee line is not discounted.
If you use collections, check how they are built:
- A manual collection includes only what you added. Fine as long as you did not add Gift wrap.
- An automated collection includes whatever matches its conditions. A condition like "Price is greater than 0" or "Product type is equal to (blank)" can match the Gift wrap product. Add a condition that excludes it, for example Product title is not equal to Gift wrap, or use a condition on tag, type or vendor that the Gift wrap product does not share. That exclusion works only with Match all conditions. With Match any condition, another rule can still include Gift wrap. Or use a manual collection that leaves it out.
The Gift wrap product is unlisted, so it never shows on collection pages in your storefront. That does not stop an automated collection from including it for discount purposes. If you rely on a collection, check it with a test cart.
If you want the discount to cover wrap too: an order discount already includes it. For a product or collection discount, include Gift wrap.
Free shipping
The fee line needs no shipping and has no weight, so it does not change weight-based shipping rates. It is a priced line, so expect it to count towards a free-shipping minimum based on order value. Check with a test cart if that matters to you.
A wrap discounted to zero
You might run a promotion that makes wrap free with a 100% discount on the Gift wrap product. That works. After checkout the app checks each order: for every paid wrap style, it counts the wrapped units and the fee units Shopify recorded and compares them. It checks that the fee is present and in the right quantity. It does not check the amount. A fee line discounted to $0 passes.
Missing, short, extra or unmatched wrap fees show as Fee differs on the Gift orders page and on the pack sheet. An unknown wrap style is flagged too. Check the order before wrapping. See Packing gift orders for what to do.
A free wrap style
A style with a price of zero adds no fee line at all. There is nothing to discount and nothing to check. If you want wrap to be free all the time, set the style's price to zero instead of running a discount.
Changing a style's price
A price change applies to carts that already hold the style. The shopper pays the price at checkout. Completed orders are not changed. There is no price lock in this version.
What the app never does
- It never charges the shopper a second time.
- It never changes the order's items or prices, cancels it, or refunds it.
- It never removes packing instructions because a fee is missing. It flags the order and leaves the decision to you.
